#WriterLifeMonth Day 22: Writing group/friends
I’ve been blessed to be some pretty amazing writing groups, including Writer’s Write in Colorado Springs. I’ve also been blessed to make some amazing writer friends, including Jonathan Marcantoni, who is one of the most giving and inspiring people I’ve met; Roberta Crownover, who is entire multitudes – kind, hilarious, vastly intelligent, thoroughly lived, and loves good booze of any stripe; Jeff Duntemann, just about the sweetest and funniest nerd in the universe (yes! the entire universe!) in addition to having the worst book cover in all of existence; M. K. Meredith, who is infinitely kind and positive, in addition to being hardworking; Powl Smith, my brother in being vertically challenged, who has a raucous and lively sense of humor, and life in general; Anita Romero, who by will alone kept a very disparate group of writers together and made us a family, and who taught me about considering the market when writing; all of my Lambda Literary genre cohort; Everett Maroon, another Lambda Literary fellow but from a different cohort, whose vision and tenacity and humor always inspire me; a few of my graduate school peers, Lauren Owen, Tammer Mahdy, Kelly Smith, and Salman Shaheen; I also include my graduate tutors, Giles Foden and Trezza Azzopardi, who gave me some cracking good advice which still guides me to this day; Emma Pérez, who wrote two of the most hypnotic, shocking, inspiring, and chilling books I’ve ever read; and last but not least in the least, C. J. Prince, who was amongst my first writing mentors, and has, over time, become a friend. C. J. will always be very dear to me for the way she took me under her wing, watched me grow and change (sometimes vastly!) and still supported me. C. J. never judges and it’s good to know there are still people like that in the world.
For some reason I’m shocked at how long this list has become – and I know I have left people out. But the number of writer friends I have made over the years is really startling to me, and just underscores how entirely spoiled and blessed I am. I work and have worked with some of the most amazing people, and I look forwards to working with more in the future.
